What are geofences?

Geofences determine what is considered on or offsite at a location.

In Timekeeping, employee punches are preapproved when made within the geofence, and pending when outside.

Geofences can be drawn manually or generated automatically using a radius around the location's center point.

Adding Location Geographic Information

The Location Geographic address defines the physical location.

If you've already added your location's Address Information, Location Geographic Information will typically be filled as well.

1. Go to Customers > Manage Locations.
2. Click the Edit Pencil in the Actions column for a location.
3. Under Location Geographic Information, enter the location's physical address. 
   • This is usually the same as Address Information.
4. Once added, JM will pull the Latitude and Longitude automatically.
5. Save the page to confirm changes.

Drawing Custom Geofences

When employees clock in or out, their GPS location is compared to the geofence to determine if they are on or offsite. Drawing geofences allow you to define your exact boundaries.

1. Go to Customers > Manage Locations.
2. Click the Edit Pencil in the Actions column for a location.
3. Open the Geofence tab.
4. A map of the location will be visible. Zoom in until you can clearly see your location.
5. Click the Draw a Shape icon.
   
6. Click and release a spot on the map to begin drawing your geofence. Continue until you've closed the shape at the starting point.
   
7. The completed geofence will become visible after closing the shape.
8. Click Save to confirm the geofence.
   

The blue pin represents the location's actual address and must be included within the geofence. The exact coordinates are determined by Google Maps.

If the blue is outside your geofence, users may experience errors when attempting to clock in or out of the location. If the blue pin does not accurately represent the location's address, it can be manually adjusted.

Resetting Custom Geofences

Reset the geofence to redraw or remove it.

1. On Location Maintenance, open the Geofence tab.
2. Click Reset and confirm the prompt.

Default Geofence Radius

If no geofence has been drawn for a location, the Default Geofence Radius will be applied automatically.

1. Go to Gear icon > Manage Account.
2. Open the Settings tab.
3. Enter a value for Default Geofence Radius (Yards).
4. Click Save to confirm.

Best Practices

• Draw geofences slightly beyond the building perimeter to account for GPS variation to reduce pending punches.
• Include dumpsters, parking lots, detached storage facilities, or any other areas an employee may visit while on-site.
• If your employees have poor GPS connection within the building (more common in basements, parking garages, facilities with heavy steel/concrete structures, etc.), consider including the parking lot to allow users to clock-in/out outside.
