Creating Break Rules
Break rules can be created from the web portal.
- On the web portal, go to Gear Icon > Manage Breaks.
- Select + Add Break Rule.
- Fill in the information. Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*).
- Name* - The name of the break. This will be visible to employees on JM Connect.
- Break Duration (Minutes)* - The length of the break, in minutes.
- Min. Schedule Length (Minutes)* - The minimum schedule duration required to apply the break.
- Min. Work Duration Required (Minutes) - The minimum amount of time an employee must be clocked in before they can take a break.
- Break Type* - Paid or Unpaid.
- Paid - The break time is included in the shift's actual duration.
- Unpaid - Unpaid break time is removed from the shift's actual duration.
- Punch Type* - Automatic or Manual.
- Automatic - The break will be automatically added to the timepunch once the Min. Work Duration is reached. Do not use this option if you are required to record the time of the break.
- Manual - The user must manually record the break on JM Connect.
- Select Save to create the break rule.
The example below shows a 30-minute lunch break.
- Because the Min. Shift Length is 480, this rule can only be added to schedules that are at least 8 hours long.
- Because the Min. Work Duration is 240, the user must be clocked into the schedule for at least 4 hours before taking a break.
- Because the Punch Type is Manual, the user can choose when to begin the break (after 4 hours).

Viewing Breaks on Reports
Timecard
The Timecard (Reports > Time > Timecard) report shows break information relative to the timepunch.
- Actual Duration (Hours) - Shows the adjusted actual duration of the shift and the unadjusted duration. Unpaid break time is reduced from the actual duration.
- Adjusted Hours (Unadjusted Hours).
Example: If an employee worked a 4-hour shift with a 15-minute paid break, the Actual Duration would be 4 (4).
If an employee worked a 4-hour shift with a 15-minute unpaid break, the Actual Duration would be 3.75 (4). The 15 minutes are deducted from the actual duration.
- Break (Hours) - The recorded break duration in hours.
- Unpaid hours show in red text.
Shift Breaks
The Shift Breaks (Reports > Time > Shift Breaks) report details on when an employee took a break. This includes the break name, break type (manual vs. automatic), and source.
